Taking a Break - 2 Up, 2 Down
March 28th, 2008 by Jeff Simmermon
Hey there — I haven’t died or had my soul eaten while I dream or anything. I’ve just been on a bit of a break from the computer, taking a trip to Las Vegas for a wedding, visiting friends in LA and now in Norfolk, VA with my family.
I’ll be back in the mix soon enough … until then, have a look at this video, which sums up the low-budget charms of my hometown pretty nicely:

If only my hometown were so cool. Not only do we not have videos, we don’t have rappers, either. We do, however, have people who dress up in period costume and wander. I’m not sure why.

Glad you’re enjoying the break.

tim and i were watching this a few weeks back and losing our shit. his favorite part was the hrt shout-out, but i think the janaf rhyme is even better. we agreed that the icing, though, is the HUGE gap at the end followed by the two or three random frames.
i also love the fact that say “nova” in reference to norfolk; obviously, as representatives of their adopted home, they need to do a little more research.

@Steve — the video pretty much sums up the region perfectly, doesn’t it — much more heart than style.
@Kristin — just to brag on the 757 a little: we got the Neptunes, Missy Elliot, Teddy Riley’s production powerhouse, and, AND - ODB got caught shoplifting sneakers at the mall down here, too.

Hey, I’ve been there! okay, some slightly different spots, and not since the Stevie Nick’s concert last fall, and not again until possibly even October. This is really hometown feeling w/out speakers on my computer. The ads I see typically have pelicans and surfboards for Va Beach.

@robin - the dudes in this video have no idea who stevie nicks is.

@Robin — I was explaining this to a friend on the subway last night. VA Beach is a low-rent holiday at best, and Norfolk’s a few cuts down from that. It’s not a place you’d like, choose to move to advance yourself unless you’re in the military or work with the ocean in some way. There’s a pretty colossal brain drain in a lot of ways — it a place to be from, but no place to be AT. At least Northern VA has some sort of cultural touchstones, or some jobs to draw people. Not so in Norfolk. You just end up there. If locations were chain restaurants, NoVa would be Shoney’s, but Norfolk is Denny’s.
