“We Are The World” by Japanese Impersonators, “Hello” on Helium: You’re Welcome
“We Are The World” was the freaking Justice League of ’80s music. Every heavy-hitter got together in one room and crooned it out for the starving kids in Africa. And you know, it totally worked, too!
When I say “heavy hitter,” I mean:
Michael Jackson
Billy Joel
Diana Ross
Ray Charles
Stevie Wonder
Bruce Springsteen
Cyndi Lauper
Tina Turner
and so many more! What could be more awesome than every ’80s superstar getting together in one room and crooning it out for Africa? Think about it …
Give up? I’ll tell you:
The only thing that could be more awesome than “We Are the World” itself is this:
“We Are the World” sung by a crew of Japanese impersonators impersonating everyone listed above.
You’re welcome. As a bonus, here’s Lionel Ritchie singing “Hello” while inhaling helium from a balloon:

Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. I love the Cyndi Lauper impersonator.

I haven’t decided what kind of blackface this is. Is it the patently offensive kind, or is it the “Billy Crystal as negro-league player”/”Billy Crystal as Sammy Davis Jr.” kind?

Well — there’s no accounting for interpretation. But I think this is meant to be more detail-oriented than mockery. Here in the States, we usually leave the impersonation of celebrities to the members of that celebrity’s race. The Japanese have much fewer options in that regard, and while they’re no tolerant angels either, I don’t think they see that makeup in the same historic context we do when we find it offensive.

I should be the WaPost’s style editor:

And, yeah, I guess those Japanese WATW folks are merely dishing out some flattery.
(If I didn’t know any better, I’d think you were being mildly condescending.)
